Air Europa celebrates 40 years dedicated to connecting people, destinations and stories. As part of this celebration, the company commemorates a milestone that reflects the airline’s strong track record over these decades and reaffirms its commitment to driving global connectivity and bringing cultures closer together.
Our origins
Four decades connecting people, destinations and emotions
1986 • Air Europa’s journey officially began on 21 November with a Tenerife–London flight operated by a Boeing 737-300. It was the first step for an airline born to open up new routes.
1988 • It reaches a milestone in commercial aviation by becoming the first Spanish airline to operate an ETOPS flight.
1993 • It breaks the domestic monopoly and opens the market to competition.
1995 • It expands internationally to London and New York.
1999 • The first next-generation Boeing 737s join the fleet.
2000 • The Boeing 767-300 is also added for transatlantic services.
2005 • It becomes the first Spanish airline to fly directly to China.
2007 • It officially joins the global SkyTeam alliance.
2012 • It establishes itself as a pioneer in sustainability with EMAS certification.
2015 • Air Europa Suma, its own customer loyalty programme, is launched.
2016 • The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner arrives, marking a technological leap forward for the company.
2018 • Air Europa Cargo begins freight transport operations.
2023 • Air Europa launches its Vuelo 2030 project to transition towards genuine sustainability.
2025 • Routes continue to expand, the company becomes the first Spanish airline to operate the Boeing 737 MAX, a key agreement is reached with Turkish Airlines, and fleet renewal is announced with the addition of up to 40 Airbus A350-300s.
2026-2028 • The delivery of the latest Boeing 737 MAX models will complete the initial order of 20 aircraft, consolidating its commitment to fleet renewal with next-generation aircraft.
