Where to Visit in Ecuador
Quito (UIO) is the capital city of Ecuador and a must-see place to visit at an elevation of 2,850 m above sea level. There’s plenty to do here. Head to the Plaza Grande Square, the historic centre of the city, and explore some of the famous markets, museums and cathedrals. It has a blend of 16th century European, Moorish and indigenous design. Ciudad Mitad del Mundo is a popular attraction – it marks the equator line so you can stand with a foot in each hemisphere. Next, take the TelefériQo (gondola ride) to the top of Pichincha Volcano for great views over the city. When you’re ready to explore further afield, take a trip to Cotopaxi National Park. Here you’ll see beautiful lakes and active volcanoes up-close. Guayaquil (GYE) is another must-see destination for adventurous travellers. This port offers the best access to the beautiful Galápagos Islands. The city is also packed with culture, so you’ll find there are plenty of museums and art galleries to explore. You can also grab a delicious local meal or glass of wine at Malecón 2000 and enjoy views over the water.
Discovering More Highlights in Ecuador
Across the sea from Ecuador’s mainland, there are plenty of beautiful nature reserves and beaches for you to enjoy. Some of our top picks include:
- Baltra Island: One of the smaller Galápagos Islands where Charles Darwin made his discoveries about natural selection. This beautiful island is full of unique indigenous wildlife.
- Tortuga Bay: Located on Santa Cruz Island, this amazing bay has white sands, clear water and a dedicated walking path.
- Galápagos Islands: Visit one of the few places in the world with such varied, unique, and numerous endemic vegetal and animal species.
When to Visit Ecuador
Quito’s temperature remains constantly warm year-round. The only two seasons in the city are wet and dry. The wet season runs from October-May and the dry season is June-September. Outside of this mountaintop city, the climate is a little different. Western Ecuador is warm with the coastal areas being affected by ocean currents. In Western Ecuador the wet season is between January and April. The rainy season can often be the best time to visit Ecuador because – although wet – these months are also the warmest and sunniest.
