Venice History

Venice is a city steeped in history. Just walking along the iconic canals you’ll see unbelievable architecture and designs dating back to the early days of settlement in the 5th century. Fondaco dei Turchi is the oldest building in Venice. It dates back to 1225. Originally a palace, this impressive building on the Grand Canal later went on to be nicknamed ‘the Turks’ Inn’ because it was taken over by the Ottoman Turkish population in the 17th century and used as a huge indoor ghetto until 1838.

Venice Points of Interest

  • Grand Canal – this is the main canal in the city and significantly larger than the other 176 in Venice. Take a gondola tour to see the intricacies of the canal system and how it works within the city.
  • Burano – take a boat ride to the nearby island of Burano. This tiny town is a beautiful, colourful attraction with every house painted a lovely bright colour.
  • Palazzo Ducale – you’ll be blown away by the beautiful ceiling paintings and intricate artworks inside this classic Venetian landmark. You can also explore the prisons and dungeons built into the palace.
  • Basilica di San Marco – the inside of this striking cathedral has some amazing historical pieces, including Lifesize bronze horse statues that previously sat proudly atop the outer facade, but were moved for preservation in the 1980s. You can climb to the top of the tower and see out across St. Mark’s Square.
  • Mark's Square – this is the historic centre of Venice and from here you can see grand marble buildings and detailed architecture.
